Concrete Contractors

Making concrete repairs or improvements

Concrete has gained visibility in the last few years as a "new" material and is showing up in a variety of applications including countertops and interior floors as well as foundations, driveways, and patios. In fact, in addition to being strong and extremely durable, concrete is a versatile, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective building material.

Hiring a concrete contractor is the same as hiring any other building contractor.

  • Obtain competitive quotes.
  • Ask for references; then check them.
  • Confirm that the contractor you select is currently licensed and carries both liability and Workers´ Comp insurance.

Forms of Concrete

The table below provides a brief introduction to the various types of concrete, descriptions, and applications.

Concrete Product Description Application
Ready mixed Most common form. Nearly three-fourths of all concrete used is batched at local plants and delivered in the familiar trucks with revolving drums. Driveways, patios, foundations
Precast Concrete products cast in a factory setting. A major benefit is the tight quality control at the factory.

Includes:

  • concrete bricks
  • paving stones
  • bridge girders
  • structural components
  • panels for cladding
Masonry Manufactured concrete. Best known for its conventional 8 x 8 x 16-inch block. Units are available in a wide variety of shapes, configurations, colors, and textures for an infinite range of building applications.
Cement-based materials Many concrete-like properties, but not actually concrete. This category includes mortar, grout, terrazzo, soil-cement, and roller-compacted concrete. Other products in this category include flowable fill and cement-treated bases. A new generation of advanced products incorporates fibers and special aggregate. Uses for materials in this category run the spectrum from interior flooring with terrazzo to soil-cement and roller-compacted concrete for pavements and dams. Newer products are used to make roofing tiles, shake shingles, lap siding, and countertops.
